Maple Butter

1 May

In Australia breakfast tradition for me growing up was Weetbix with milk.  In winter to warm our tummies Mum would pre soak the Weetbix with hot water, looking back now, I guess it was because that was easier than heating the milk as it was before the days of microwaves (gosh am I -that- old?)

As I got older and breakfast became more of a grab it an run, the go to was Vegemite and butter.  The catch being the toast has to be buttered hot, so the butter melts, and just a scraping of Vegemite, too much and ugh, too little and it’s just butter.  🙂

A treat, on special occasions would be hot crumpets with butter and honey.  I can still remember Mum asking me one day what was on the front of my shirt and me saying  ‘the crumpet juice’ leaked on my clean shirt.  I must have been about 3 or 4 at the time.

As an adult, I can have hot crumpets with honey and butter whenever I feel like it, which does mean that crumpets have somewhat lost their specialness.   Well I’m pleased to say that I have that specialness back thanks to Maple Butter.

I’m a member of a cooking group called Thermofun, a group I discovered not long after buying a Thermomix.  Leonie, the creator, is responsible for me rediscovering my love of cooking.   Now she is responsible for me falling in love with hot crumpets for breakfast again.  Checkout the recipe here http://thermofun.com/maple-butter/

Why?

Why won’t my lemons ripen?

2015 saw me receive a Lemon tree as a gift from my son.  Yay, I love lemon curd.  My Pop had bought us a Lemon tree when were first married  but we had to leave it in the garden of our first house.

Gardening in the country has a few more challenges than the city.  Mostly from Possums and Wallabies.  The first night my lemon was left on the back deck someone had a nibble on the stem and gorged on the new leaf buds 😦

Then the first, second and I don’t know how many flowers have been lost in the wind.  Westerly winds and I are not friends  😦

Then the fruit would set, get to about the size of my pinky and drop off 😦

Then the fruit would grow bigger and disappear, I suspect the wallabies were picking it off.

Finally, it appears the tree is strong enough, there is plenty of decent sized fruit, there are new flowers, there is new fruit budding……… but nothing is ripening.

I think I can see some hints of yellow, maybe.  How long can a lemon sit on a tree?

My latest lemon tree love is a new fertiliser, instead of a water soluble weekly solution, I’ve scattered a slow release that according to the packet can last up to 6 months, and is only used by the plant when it needs it.

If anyone is a lemon guru and has any advise please leave a comment.

Luncheon with new friend

10 Feb

Today I met face to face with a new internet friend.  We both laughed and talked a lot.  We also both remembered the first time we met face to face with someone from the internet – Oh no, what if they are an axe murderer?  Suffice to say neither of us are axe murderers, but we did manage to polish off a long lunch, and maybe I forgot to take a photo before digging in to dessert 😉

Tonight I had another play with night shots or late sunset photos.  I’m thinking I might be getting the hang of it.  I downloaded a trial copy of lightroom today, but that is a whole new world of skills I need to learn.  So for now, I’m sticking with simple crops as my only edit.
